2014 Volkswagen Jetta - Seized Ignition (Failed Housing)

Date: October 26, 2026 Vehicle: Volkswagen Jetta (2014) Location: Olympia Category: Repair
Today we have a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta where both of the customer's keys would not turn the ignition anymore!  This is a common failure. The anti-restart detent ball had broken its perch out of the inside of the housing, and it jammed between the housing and the ignition cylinder. Remove security bolts from housing to column (There is no room to work for this job, patience required) Remove housing. Delete the anti-restart detent ball assembly. Clean out the shrapnel. Clean and grease the ignition, housing, etc while disassembled. Re-installed - all is well! Ignition works better than new, this particular feature leaves many ignitions with more resistance than normal compared to older 2000's VW ignitions which did not have this vulnerable mechanism. There were only 120K miles on the vehicle when housing failed, which I find to be common. 120-180K. Thank you for your business -Sean
